Bionics, or ‘inspired by nature’, stands for the conversion of basic knowledge and technology from biological research into innovative products and processes. It is implemented as a supplementary tool for the solution of technology problems and the development of innovations.
The sphere of activity of the bionics research area at the ITV involves the creative conversion of bionic ideas into innovative products through the manufacture and processing of fiber-based materials. A wide range of different finishing technologies are available for bionic research at the ITV: polymer synthesis, the spinning of special fibers, specialized textile forming and surface modification, and nanotechnology, the manufacture of composites by layering, laminating, and resin injection.
The close collaboration among the experts of the biological institutions is of significance for this research area for the targeted analysis of biological materials and their functional mechanisms. The ITV is a dedicated partner in the ‘BIOKON’ and ‘Biomimetik’ Center of Excellence with the aim to tap and identify the full potential of bionics for industry and science. Today the competences in the field of biomimetics lie in the Centre of Biomimetic Innovations for the industry.
