Braiding |
Traditional technology for custom-made high-tech products
Using the braiding technology simple candle wicks and shoelaces but also complex structures such as ultra high-tensile ropes for the assurance of offshore platforms, the finest surgical (sewing) thread or medical stents are produced.
The preselection and the adjustability of the cord angle when braiding makes it possible to create custom-made characteristics of the braiding products. Through the especially spiral arrangement of the threads crossing over and crossing under the nettings are very drapable and can be bent kink-free.
The fiber reinforced composite technology with its demand for adjustable cord angles for the absorption of torsion load and coast load lead to a strong expansion of the field of application of the braiding technology.
Running research activities at the ITV Denkendorf in various fields of application of the braiding technology serve in addition the improvement of the processes and the expansion of the range of application. At the ITV a multitude of different braiding machines are available and it can draw upon many years of experience and know-how in the braiding technology.
Current projects in the field of research of braiding technology (abstract):
- Braiding pultrusion of fiber reinforced composite components with increased functionality e.g. subsequent deformability
- Braiding pultrusion of the bionically inspired “technical plant stems”, development of thin filter tubes with defined separation efficiency and energy-saving mechanical dedusting
- Development of implants using the braiding technology, e.g. novel stent constructions
- Fiber reinforced composite materials with a higher functionality ,e.g. improved passive vibration damper.
