Textile product research and development for medical use

The focus of this research area is on the development and optimization of medical textiles referring to a wide variety of products. This includes hospital textiles (bed linen, patient and care staff clothing, surgical garments, and covering systems), incontinence products, surgical dressings, transdermal and drug delivery systems. Product research and development comprises barrier and compression textiles, spacer textiles for sandwich constructions, filter, antimicrobial, and smart textiles. Research activities include the production of biostable and/or degradable special fibers and layered structures, such as three-dimensional weaves, knits and warps as well as nano-fleeces. Medical textiles require special testing techniques owing to their special specifications and strict application guidelines. A biophysiological measuring system specially developed by the ITV involves testing on skin tolerance, functionality and barrier effectiveness as well as aging and function stability concerning reusability.
