The transformative technology of the 21st century
‘Nanotechnology refers to the evaluation, application and fabrication of structures, molecular materials and systems of a dimension and production tolerance of generally less than 100 nanometers. Simply because system components are on a nano-scale, this enables new functions and properties to emerge to improve existing, or create new, products and applications.’
(definition as of the BMBF, 2007)
Nanotechnology offers for textile-based products these three basic launching pads: firstly, the creation of extremely fine nano-scale fibers (‘nanofibers’), secondly, the incorporation of nano-scale particles into the fiber matrix (‘nano-composite fibers’), and thirdly, the functionalization of the fiber surface by means of function carriers on the nano-scale (‘nano-surface functionalization’). The ITV implements nano-technology through interdisciplinary collaboration using the three above described bases. Current emphasis is laid on process development to produce nano-fibers for filter applications, nano-structured textiles for biomedical products, nano-Lotus-Effect fibers for self-cleaning textiles and nano-composite fibers.
We offer:
- process development for nano-scale components for the textile manufacturing industry
- development of nano-structured textile materials
- testing of application-relevant properties of nano-technologically modified textiles
- surface characterization of nano-scale layers by way of scanning electron microsopy (SEM)
- safety analyses of the release potential of nano-particles from nanotechnology functionalized textiles
